Gareth, a native of Carmarthen and a Welsh speaker, attended Aberystwyth University gaining a joint honours degree in Business Studies and Economics in 1979.
He trained with KPMG Swansea and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1983. He spent 12 years with KPMG gaining extensive experience in the preparation and audit of the accounts of limited companies, the latter period as a Senior Manager in their Cardiff office.
Gareth returned to Carmarthen in 1991 to take over his father’s practice, Donald Owen & Co. This was a small firm with a predominantly agricultural client base and which took great pride in providing a close relationship and cost effective service to its clients.
After over 28 years as a sole practitioner, the opportunity arose to merge the practice with that of Clay Shaw Butler. Gareth now acts in a consultancy role on a part-time basis and is responsible for the ex-Donald Owen & Co clients.
